Policy Dialogue - Boosting employment rates: the 1,000 billion Euros potential

AK EUROPA, the Brussels Office of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour, and the ÖGB Europabüro, the Brussels Office of the Austrian Trade Union Federation, along with EPC, the European Policy Centre, cordially invite you to a policy dialogue on

Boosting employment rates –

the 1,000 billion Euros potential

When: Monday 25 March 2013, 14.30h-16.30h (registration from 14.10h)

Where: Résidence Palace, Polak Room, Rue de La Loi 155

At this Policy Dialogue AK EUROPA, ÖGB Europabüro and the EPC will present and discuss the findings of a study recently published by the EPC: “1000 billion Euros at stake: How boosting employment can address demographic change and public deficits”. The findings confirm that improving employment rates is the best strategy to prepare for population ageing and maintain our welfare model, especially at a time of accelerating demographic change. The paper also provides evidence of the financial gains Europe could make with an employment rate of 75% in the age group 20-64: 1000 billion Euros are at stake.

Our panel of experts will discuss the importance of improving labour market integration across all age groups, suggest some concrete measures in the light of the Social Investment Package to achieve the Europe 2020 employment target, and put forward solutions for better use of public spending through investment in human capital.

Speakers include:

Detlef Eckert, Director "Europe 2020: Employment Policies" of the European Commission

Józef Niemiec, Deputy General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC)

Sven Giegold, Member of the European Parliament

Erich Foglar, President of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB)

Josef Wöss, Head of the socio-political Department of the Chamber of Labour in Vienna

Adrian van den Hoven, Deputy Director General of Business Europe

Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Economist of the EPC

The panel discussion will be held in English and German with simultaneous translation.

Following the discussion we would like to invite you to join us for a cocktail reception.
