CETA and TTIP - A Lobby-Wonderland for Industry and Business?

AK EUROPA, the ÖGB Europabüro, Friends of the Earth Europe, Lobby Control and Corporate Europe Observatory would like to invite you to our panel debate:

A Lobby-Wonderland for Industry and Business?

Tuesday, 14th of April 2015, 18:30h
Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU
Avenue de Cortenbergh 30, 1040 Bruxelles, 1st floor

The ongoing political discussions about the “Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement” (CETA) and the “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)” have lead to heated debates about democratic legitimacy and the risk of weakened social, labour, consumer protection and environmental standards. In particular, dispute settlement regimes such as ISDS have aroused resistance against unjustified privileges for corporate interests. But ISDS is not the only contentious element. The concept of “regulatory cooperation” in TTIP is relatively new to the debate. The basic idea behind “regulatory cooperation” is that a regulatory body established by the EU and the US would be screening if new legislative proposals are ‘trade and investment’ proof. If that is not the case, the proposal could be sent back to the drawing board, be delayed or even be abolished. Business lobby groups would have an official right to alert the regulatory body.

What are the reasons behind the seemingly disproportionate influence of business interests on trade deals? And what are the risks for workers, citizens and the environment?

On the panel:

Ignacio GARCIA BERCERO, Director, European Commission, DG Trade

Ferdi DE VILLE, Professor, Gent University

Joerg LEICHTFRIED, MEP, Vice-Chair S&D Group

Eva DESSEWFFY, Chamber of Labour (AK) Vienna

Paul DE CLERCK, Friends of the Earth Europe

The discussion will be held in German and English with simultaneous translation.
After the discussion we invite you to a buffet.
