AK EUROPA, the Brussels Office of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour, and ÖGB Europabüro, the Brussels Office of the Austrian Trade Union Federation cordially invite you to our panel debate:

CETA: A boost for the economy or TTIP through the backdoor?

Wednesday, 7 September 2016, 18.30h

Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU
Avenue de Cortenbergh 30, 1040 Brussels, 1st floor

In July, the European Commission presented the Member States with the proposal for the signing, the preliminary application and the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada (“Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement” CETA). The signing of the Agreement has been scheduled to take place as early as October on the occasion of the next EU-Canada Summit. Following the approval of the European Parliament it would come into force preliminarily.

During the course of the negotiations so far, European trade unions and civil society organisations have voiced clear criticism with regard to the democratic structuring and transparency of the negotiation process, the planned special rights for investors, the risk of social, environmental and consumer protection standards being undermined and the inadequate protection of public services.

The European Commission and industry associations do not tire of arguing that CETA will make an outstanding contribution to boost the economy and to create jobs in the EU. But is this really so? A study commissioned by the Chamber of Labour, which will be presented in Brussels for the first time, examines the question whether CETA will really pay off for the economy and the workers in Europe.
