Distribution Inequality:

A Threat for the European Economy?

Tuesday, 15 November 2016, 12:00-14:30

Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU
Avenue de Cortenbergh 30, 1040 Brussels, 1st floor

Inequality is rising in most parts of the world. Europe is no exception to this development. Since the 1980s, in most OECD countries the number of households ranking top in wealth distribution have accrued even more wealth. Moreover, wealth inequality has received far less attention than income inequality in the past, but this has changed as economists and policy makers have now also turned to wealth inequality issues.

As rising inequality harms long-term economic growth and welfare, decisive action by policy makers is urgently needed.

What are the drivers of income and wealth inequality? What risks does a disproportionate accumulation of wealth by a small group impose on the European economy? What explains the differences in wealth inequality in the euro area? What could the best policy responses to combat rising inequality look like?
